What Does a Recovery Coach at the Center for Intimacy Recovery do?

Updated: Nov 16, 2023

Adrian Mullings, a recovery coach at the Center for Intimacy Recovery, works closely with our clients to support their recovery from sex and love addiction. Our clients have found that utilizing Adrian’s experience and expertise in recovery can help them in their recovery journey.

Here are some ways in which Adrian assists clients:

1. Define and Understand Sobriety: Adrian helps clients define what sobriety is in the context of sex and love addiction. They work together to establish clear boundaries and guidelines for maintaining sobriety, ensuring that clients have a solid understanding of what it entails. Adrian also works to help clients break down their denial and ability to minimize and justify their behaviors.

2. Develop a Recovery Plan:

Adrian collaborates with clients to create a personalized recovery plan tailored to their specific needs and goals. This plan may include strategies for managing triggers, establishing healthy routines, and incorporating self-care practices that promote overall well-being.

3. Relapse Prevention:

Recognizing the challenges of relapse, Adrian assists clients in developing effective relapse prevention strategies. He helps clients identify potential triggers, develop coping mechanisms, and create a plan to navigate challenging situations, reducing the risk of relapse.

4. Develop Support Systems:

Adrian emphasizes the importance of building a strong support system. He works with clients to identify and connect with appropriate resources, such as support groups, therapists, or other professionals who can provide additional guidance and support throughout the recovery process. Entering the world of 12 Step recovery can feel daunting or even shame-filled. Adrian helps clients get comfortable in this world and learn how make it part of one’s life and support system. He also helps clients identify meetings that are helpful to them and to find a sponsor.

5. Provide Extra Support and Help in Between Sessions:

Clients often arrive at our practice in crisis. They are attempting to live without their primary coping mechanism and sometimes they are facing hurt and anger at home and don’t know how to handle it. Adrian understands that recovery is an ongoing process, and he is available to provide additional support and guidance outside of scheduled sessions. Whether it's through phone calls, emails, or other means of communication, Adrian offers clients the extra support they may need between sessions.

6. Develop Healthy, Rewarding Alternatives to Replace Unhealthy Behaviors:

Adrian assists clients in exploring and developing healthy alternatives to the self-harming behaviors associated with addiction. He helps clients discover and engage in activities that bring joy, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose, promoting a more balanced and rewarding lifestyle. Adrian also helps clients to develop multiple levels of intimacy in their lives with themselves and others.

7. Guide Clients in 12-Step Recovery:

Adrian is well-versed in the principles and practices of 12-Step recovery programs. He serves as a guide, helping clients understand and actively participate in a strong 12-Step program. Adrian provides support, encouragement, and insights to help clients navigate the steps and integrate them into their recovery journey.

8. Develop Empathy and Understanding:

Adrian helps clients to develop a greater sense of understanding how their actions have impacted the most important people to them. He reaches clients how to work through shame/anger reactions to respond with empathy and compassion and softness.

Through his relatable and compassionate approach, Adrian Mullings supports clients in these areas, empowering them to achieve lasting recovery and a healthier, more fulfilling life.
